Asmahan Ilian is keeping culture alive through Talleh Cultural Center.

Holding on to one’s culture is a source of pride and joy. It’s a way of honouring the past and leaving a meaningful mark on the present. Today, as the world becomes more interconnected, people are rediscovering the importance of cultural legacies, and how they shape who we are. This is at the heart of the story of Talleh Cultural Center

Founded in 2016 by Asmahan Ilian, Talleh Cultural Center is a social enterprise with a mission to support Palestinian craftsmanship and provide women artisans with a platform to thrive. Ilian, a social entrepreneur from Jerusalem, realised that there was a lack of spaces dedicated to both preserving Palestinian culture and providing economic opportunities for local artisans, especially women.

Ilian’s journey to founding Talleh is one that really hits home. After more than 20 years working with international organisations like the UN, and finding success in the global sector, she felt a strong pull to return home—to give back to her community in a way that was more meaningful and connected to her roots. With a Master’s degree in Strategic Marketing and years of experience as a coach and consultant, Ilian had built a successful career. But what she longed for most was to use her skills to make a difference where it mattered most: in her own homeland.

Her love for Palestinian culture ran deep, and she saw an opportunity to do something that would not only honour that heritage but also empower local artisans. It was a way to preserve traditions that had been passed down through generations while creating real, lasting opportunities for the people who carried those traditions forward. The centre began by focusing on handmade products like embroidery, weaving, and pottery. What started as a small project soon grew into a community of over 80 artisans.

Talleh grew into more than just a shop for beautiful products—it became a place for creativity, learning, and skill development. Artisans not only displayed their work but also learned new skills to help them grow in their careers. Over time, Talleh’s handmade items gained recognition both locally and globally, reaching customers around the world. This success allowed Talleh to keep growing, supporting even more artisans, while staying true to its mission of preserving culture.

One of Talleh’s latest projects was a complete upgrade of its pottery studio. The team invested in top-of-the-line equipment and tools, transforming the space into a professional and inspiring environment for both artisans and trainees. With the new studio, artisans can produce their best work, while those learning pottery at Talleh have a more enriching experience. This upgrade is just one step in Talleh’s ongoing journey, as it continues to find ways to honour Palestinian heritage and empower those who carry it forward.
